In Memory of Lawrence Jupp

Dave Wood phoned me up last night to share some bad news: our friend Lawrence was instantly killed yesterday morning in a head-on collision between his motorcycle and another vehicle in Essex. He was 28. Lawrence had only recently returned from a year's travel around the world, and it was only 2 weeks ago that we were all sitting in the Basketmakers Pub catching up with him. I hadn't seen Lawrence in probably 4 or 5 years. It was a great reunion for all. I first met Lawrence when I moved down to Brighton to live with Joe, who I was then dating. Lawrence attended Sussex University and graduated in 2000, having done an undergraduate degree in programming alongside Dave, Joe and others. I spent many a mornings with him and Bob that summer, drinking tea and sitting in the basement pf their student house watching morning tv and being grumpily unemployed together. When I saw him, I was struck by the fact that the grumpyness that marked his earlier 20s was replaced by an upbeat positivity and excitement for the wider world. He talked of maybe living in New Zealand next. Lawrence was a keen outdoor enthusiast and it was great to become friends on Flickr where his pictures from his recent travels are on display. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ljupp/ The one thing Lawrence taught me was that you can eat meat that's gone past the sell-by date and it won't kill you. Either that, or he had a stomach of steel! Dave's tribute Article in Evening Star http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/essex/7137372.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/essex/7139399.stm
